Qurbani Day – Conduct Of A Muslim

“The flesh and blood (of the Qurbani animals) will never reach Allah, but it is your Taqwa that will reach Him.” (Hajj, Aayat 37)

The following are common sins we may get involved in on the day of Qurbani. By rectifying ourselves, Insha Allah, we will turn the Day of Qurbani into a fruitful day – a day of Taqwa which is the objective of the entire Ibaadat of Qurbani as mentioned in the Aayat above.

  1. Photos & Videos: Unfortunately, nowadays pictures and videos are taken of Qurbani animals. Videos are shared on social media, family groups, etc. of the catching, slaughtering, etc. of animals on Qurbani day. While on the one hand an act of Ibaadat is taking place, yet this act is polluted with the major sin of photography/videography! Severe warnings have been sounded in the Hadith Shareef for people who indulge in photography (of animate objects). Let us ensure we don’t pollute our Qurbani Ibaadat with Haraam accursed photos/videos.
  2. Intermingling: While Qurbani at farms are known to have intermingling between men and women, the same may happen at one’s backyards if Qurbani is done there. While women are permitted to slaughter animals, this should be done under strict Laws of Hijaab. Hijaab is Waajib between sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, as well as between the male-workers who may be assisting during Qurbani. Hijaab is also Waajib between females and male cousins! If a woman wishes to slaughter her Qurbani animal, she may do so by following the protocols of Hijaab.
  3. Qurbani in a box: The entire spirit of Qurbani is destroyed with this new trend. What Ta’leem (teaching) of Qurbani are we giving to our children and grandchildren if we opt for this ‘boxed’ Qurbani? This trend should be stopped by Muslim buyers by simply avoiding purchasing/choosing this option!
  4. Dressing and Salaah: While on the day of Qurbani many animals will be sacrificed, it shouldn’t be that one sacrifices the Sunnah dressing code as well as Salaah in the Masjid – for men – on its respective times. What Qurbani are we really doing if our Salaah is not performed in the Masjid (for men)?

By following the above points, Insha Allah, some flavour of Taqwa will come into our Qurbani – Aameen.
