Question: Is it part of the Sunnah to give gifts on 10th Muharram? Today it is a custom. Many Muslims advertise specials on gifts etc. prior to Aashurah.
Answer: The Hadith pertaining to the Ibaadat doesn’t mention to give gifts. The Hadith only speaks about spending a little extra on the day of Aashurah. This doesn’t mean one should go shopping and buy gifts for children, nephews, family and the whole world.
Yes, the husband should spend a little extra in terms of buying something which is normally brought to the house like fruits, some extra goodies as long as the item is Halaal. If the father gives some spending money to his children, then on Aashurah he can give a little extra. If the husband gives monthly allowance to his wife, then on Aashurah he should give a little extra. As long as the husband and father can afford this.
This is what is meant in the Hadith pertaining to Aashurah. Unfortunately, modernized individuals and even modern Ulama promote Aashurah gifts. This is totally incorrect.
