Someone gave these tips for those stranded in their cars:
I don’t understand why they leave thier lights on.
For anyone stuck like that there are a few pointers…
You’re in for the long game so :
1. Don’t run your engine the whole time… only run it every 10 -15 min to generate heat. (But not so long a gap that coolant freezes)
2. keep a small gap in the window for fresh air. Carbon dioxide build up is a real thing.
3. Make sure your exhaust has a clear exit – you don’t want carbon monoxide in your ‘snow dome’ (the gap under your car will allow exhaust fumes to be pulled back to the front and drawn into your car if you’re using the vents)
4. Insulate – you can place floor mats etc on the outside of your windows as they are the biggest area for loss of heat
5. Visibility – if you are isolated then go out occasionally to clean your tail lights and headlights (and any other reflectors) so you can be spotted in the white-out.
6. Conserve energy – Don’t run the lights, fan, radio etc unless you need to.
7. Patience – you’re in for a long game.
