One night while some guests were with Hadhrat Umar Bin Abdul Aziz (Rahmatullah alaih) the lamp went out. As he rose to light the lamp, a guest said: “O Ameerul Mu’mineen, you remain seated, I shall light the lamp.” Declining the offer, Hadhrat Umar Bin Abdul Aziz went and lit the lamp. On returning, he commented: “Before lighting the lamp, I was Umar Bin Abdul Aziz, and after lighting the lamp I was still Umar Bin Abdul Aziz.”
Meaning: Before and after he remained he was. By doing ‘work’, he never loose his title of Ameerul-Mu’mineen. This was his humility.
