Hazrat Umar Bin Abdul Azeez’s Taqwa

The governor of Urdun had sent a gift of two baskets of fresh dates for the Khalifah, Hazrat Umar Bin Abdul Azeez (Rahmatullahi alaih).

The Khalifah asked: “How were these dates delivered?”

He was informed that the horses used for postal deliveries were used.

He said: “I don’t have a greater right than the general public to these horses. Sell both baskets of dates and use the money to buy feed for the horses.”

When the price was ascertained in the market place for the dates, the Khalifah’s nephew purchased both baskets. He presented one basket to the Khalifah while he retained one for himself.

Hazrat Umar Bin Abdul Azeez (Rahmatullahi alaih) commented: “Now it is Halaal for me to eat of the dates.”
