Death And Du’a For Mushriks – Impermissible! (Part 1)

Announcing the prohibition for making Du’a for the Mushrikeen – bishops, icons and atheists are also included – Allah Ta’ala clearly states in His Kalaam addressing His Beloved Nabi (Sallalalhu alaihi wasallam) and ALL Mu’mineen:

“It is NOT (permissible) for the Nabi, nor for the Mu’mineen to seek forgiveness (i.e. make Du’a) for the Mushrikeen, even if they be their relatives, after it has become clear to them that they (the Mushrikeen) are the residents of the Blaze (Jahannam).” (Surah Taubah, Aayat 113)

The above Aayat was revealed when Abu Taalib – the uncle of Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) – died. Although he took care of Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam), however, he died without Imaan. Thereafter, Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) took an oath that he will make Istighfaar (i.e. make Du’a) for his uncle until he is prohibited from doing so. Thereupon, this Aayat was revealed instructing Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) as well as ALL MU’MINEEN till the Day of Qiyaamah NOT to make Du’a for ANY Mushrik – be he an icon, a hero or an anti-apartheid and human rights activist!

The above Aayat was in relation to the death of the uncle of Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) – Abu Taalib. Truly, the service Abu Taalib gave Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was immense. Coupled with that, he was the paternal uncle of Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam). Hence, due to this blood relation, naturally, Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was grieved upon his death without Imaan. However, in front of the Commands of Allah Ta’ala, even aspects related to such close relatives are Divinely Governed! Hence, in the Aayat, mention is made specifically of ‘even if they be their relatives’. The instruction was that even if such close relatives who did so much for one’s personal safety, etc. died without Imaan, permission is not granted from Allah Ta’ala to make Istighfaar and Du’a for them.

Regarding the deaths of bishops, pastors, Mushriks, etc. who preached Dhalaalat (misguidance), Kufr and Shirk their entire life, the following should be borne in mind:

  1. True Mu’mineen will NOT even say ‘RIP’ as this is a type of ‘Du’a’ wishing the life in the grave to be a peaceful one. There is NO peace for disbelievers in their graves!
  2. It is HARAAM and IMPERMISSIBLE to attend any of the funeral services, interfaith meetings, cathedral attendance and ‘interment of ashes’ of ALL non-Muslims. Shaykhs and Ulama are also NOT permitted to join in any of these.
  3. Nowhere in the Seerat does it appear that Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) participated in the funeral services and burial of any of the ‘icons’ of the Kuffaar.
  4. Great Ambiyaa’ (Alaihimus salaam) were prohibited from making Du’a and Istighfaar for their relatives who died without Imaan. How can we do so for Mushriks and bishops?
