7km Walk For Women

A Haraam 7 Km Run / Walk For Muslim Women

Question: Some people in a Muslim community have arranged the following fund raising event, as depicted in the ad I received:

  • Inviting ALL women to join for a woman’s day walk/run
  • 7km duration (distance)
  • Starting at approximately 6:15-6:30
  • R150 entry fee, includes a Wimpy breakfast. All proceeds towards the local security company (neighbourhood watch)
  • Please wear a touch of pink

Can Muslim women participate in this walk/run as a fundraiser?

Answer: ALL participants of this Haraam walk / run for women have discarded the clear-cut – NassFatwa of Allah Ta’ala directed to the Best of Women of this Ummah – the noble wives of Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) – mentioned in the following Aayat of the Qur’an Majeed:

“And (O Women / wives of Rasulullah!) remain glued in your homes, and do not make a display of yourselves like the exhibition of Jaahiliyyah.” (Surah Ahzaab, Aayat 33)

If the Best of Women of this Ummah at whom no Muslim male will cast (Na-uthu Billah!) lustful glances are asked to remain at home, then what can be said of women who are called to dress in pink in a 7km fundraising walk, while parading themselves in full view of every and any Tom, Dick, Harry, Zaid, Amr and Bakr under the banner of a ‘woman’s day walk / run’?

It is Haraam to arrange such a walk. It is Haraam to partake of the Wimpy breakfast. It is Haraam to dress in pink while walking / running on the streets. The R150 payment is Haraam.

Husbands who allow their women to participate in this Haraam walk and in other similar events, should ponder over the following Ahaadith:

Warning The Cuckold – Dayyooth – Husband:

Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “There are three (types of people) at whom Allah Azza Wa Jall will not look (with Mercy) on the Day of Qiyaamah. The one who disobeys his parents, the woman who imitates men in her outward appearance and the cuckold (Dayyooth).” (Nasaai)

A cuckold is a husband who doesn’t care who speaks or looks at his wife.

The Best Thing For A Muslim Woman:

Hazrat Ali (Radhiyallahu anhu) reports that once Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) asked the Sahabah (Radhiyallahu anhum): ‘What is the best thing for a (Muslim) woman?’ They remained silent.

Hazrat Ali (Radhiyallahu anhu) says: ‘When I went home, I asked Fatimah (Radhiyallahu anha) about this.

She said: ‘(The best thing for a woman) is that she sees no man, and no man sees her.’

Hazrat Ali (Radhiyallahu anhu) says: ‘I mentioned that to Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) who said: ‘Fatimah is but a part of me.’ (Kanzul-Ummaal)

When A Muslim Woman Has To Emerge Due To A Valid Need (Accompanying Her Mahram):

“But, they should emerge in unattractive garments (should need force them to emerge)” (Abu Dawood)

Adorning Oneself:

“The likeness of a woman who is in adornment (like wearing PINK clothes at a walk/run) in a place other than her husband’s (like in the park, or in streets of the town under than banner of a walk/run) is that of the darkness which will prevail on the Day of Qiyaamah. There is no Noor for her”. (Mishkaat)

The Duty Of A Muslim Woman:

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Rahmatullahi alaih) said, “The main duty of women is to engage in their domestic affairs. Thus, true and original Hijaab directed by the Shariah is Hijaab Bil Buyoot (Concealment within homes).”
